Postcards from the Past

Historic postcards were old-school social media

I had the pleasure of attending a local history presentation at the West Volusia Historical Society, where Bill Mancinik and Randy Jackson talked about their new book, Postcards of Historic DeLand Florida.

Postcards used to be like text messages: a quick, easy, and affordable way to stay in touch with friends and family all over the country. Sometimes the postcards themselves were free, and stamps were just a penny! Or maybe they were more like Instagram: beautiful images, sometimes painted, sometimes photographed, and occasionally heavily filtered.

The postcard book is a work of art, and I’ve already ordered copies for the shop.
